Safer Opening and Closing Routines for Businesses
Simple practices for staff arriving first, leaving last and handling unusual activity around a business site.
Opening and closing times create predictable moments when fewer people are present and attention is divided. A consistent routine reduces avoidable exposure.
Before entering or locking up
- Look for damaged doors, gates, windows, locks or unfamiliar vehicles before approaching.
- Avoid entering alone if there are clear signs of forced entry or suspicious activity.
- Keep exterior lighting and camera views clear around entrances and parking areas.
Control access and information
- Do not share alarm codes, keys or access credentials beyond authorised staff.
- Remove access promptly when staff roles change.
- Keep opening, closing and cash-handling routines private where possible.
Make escalation clear
- Staff should know who to call for security assistance and when not to confront a threat.
- Keep emergency and keyholder details current.
- Record recurring suspicious activity so patterns can be reviewed rather than treated as isolated events.
