Going Away? A Practical Property Security Checklist
What to check before a weekend away, holiday or longer absence.
A quiet property changes normal patterns. A short pre-departure check can prevent avoidable failures while you are away.
Before leaving
- Test the alarm and confirm it can arm normally.
- Check camera recording and remote connectivity if you rely on it.
- Confirm backup power is healthy where installed.
- Close and lock accessible windows, doors, gates and garages.
People and communication
- Confirm keyholder contact details.
- Tell only trusted people who genuinely need to know you are away.
- Arrange safe handling of deliveries, post and visible signs of absence.
When you return
- Approach normally but do not enter if something looks disturbed.
- Check the alarm/event history if an activation occurred.
- Report faults discovered while away instead of simply bypassing them.
