How to Identify and Report Suspicious Behaviour
Focus on observable behaviour, useful descriptions and safe reporting rather than assumptions about how someone looks.
Suspicious behaviour is about context and actions. Good reporting describes what happened, where and when without turning appearance, race or clothing alone into evidence.
Look for behaviour that does not fit the setting
- Repeatedly testing gates, doors or vehicle handles.
- Watching a property for extended periods while changing position when noticed.
- Following residents or vehicles through controlled access without authorisation.
- Tampering with cameras, lights, fencing or access equipment.
Report facts, not conclusions
- Give the exact location and time.
- Describe actions first, then useful identifying details.
- Include vehicle registration, direction of travel or distinguishing features only when safely observed.
Do not create a confrontation
- Keep distance.
- Do not pursue someone yourself.
- Use the appropriate security, CPF or SAPS reporting channel for the situation.
