How to Make CCTV More Useful for Security
Practical checks for camera positioning, recordings, timestamps, lighting and maintenance.
CCTV is most useful when it captures identifiable activity at the places that matter and when the footage can still be retrieved after an incident.
Cover decisions and access points
- Prioritise gates, doors, driveways and likely approaches.
- Avoid relying only on very wide views where people and vehicles are too small to be useful.
- Check night-time image quality, glare and blocked views.
Confirm recordings are really available
- Check that the recorder is storing footage for the period you expect.
- Verify date and time are accurate.
- Confirm authorised users know how to preserve relevant footage before it is overwritten.
Maintain the whole path
- Inspect cameras, cabling, network links, storage and power rather than treating the camera alone as the system.
- Clean lenses and remove vegetation or objects blocking views.
- Report intermittent video or storage faults before an incident exposes them.
