Panic Buttons: When and How to Use Them
What a panic button is for, how household members should understand it and why testing matters.
A panic button is an emergency signalling tool, not a substitute for judgement. Everyone expected to use one should understand what it triggers and what to do after activation.
Know what your button triggers
- Confirm whether it sends a silent or audible panic signal.
- Know which monitoring or response arrangement receives it.
- Keep fixed and mobile panic devices accessible to authorised users.
Use it for genuine urgent threats
- Activate when you need immediate security assistance and it is safe to do so.
- Move to a safer position where possible.
- Follow the agreed communication procedure after activation if you can do so safely.
Test without creating a false emergency
- Arrange tests with the monitoring/control room first.
- Replace weak batteries and report damaged devices.
- Update users when panic procedures change.
