How to Reduce Your Risk of a House Break-In
A practical home-security checklist covering routine, perimeter awareness, alarms, CCTV and what to do before a problem starts.
No single device prevents every break-in. The strongest approach is layered: make entry harder, improve early detection, keep systems working and make sure everyone in the household knows what to do.
Control the easy opportunities
- Keep gates, garage doors and external doors closed and locked when they are not actively in use.
- Do not leave keys, remotes or access tags visible near windows or doors.
- Trim vegetation that creates concealed approaches to doors, windows or boundary walls.
Use your alarm as part of a routine
- Arm the system whenever the property is unattended, including short trips.
- Know which zones are bypassed and why.
- Test panic and alarm signalling at agreed intervals with your security provider.
Make CCTV useful, not decorative
- Cover likely approaches and entrances, not only wide scenic views.
- Check that recordings are actually being retained and timestamps are correct.
- Protect camera and network power with appropriate backup where practical.
Plan the response before an incident
- Keep keyholder details current.
- Make sure family members know who to call and where panic devices are located.
- Do not confront an intruder to protect property; move to safety and contact emergency/security services when possible.
