Security During Loadshedding and Power Failures
How to reduce avoidable security gaps when mains power is interrupted or backup systems are under strain.
Power interruptions can affect alarms, cameras, routers, electric fencing, gate motors and remote connectivity differently. The goal is to know what stays operational, what does not and what needs backup before an outage happens.
Know what depends on mains power
- List the security systems that need electricity and identify which have working backup power.
- Check whether network equipment and internet connectivity remain available if remote cameras or monitoring depend on them.
- Do not assume a battery is healthy because the system worked during the previous outage.
Test backup systems deliberately
- Arrange safe tests for alarms and monitoring where required.
- Check battery age, charging faults and low-battery warnings.
- Confirm gates, intercoms and access control have an agreed manual or backup procedure.
Treat repeated power faults as maintenance issues
- Report recurring low-battery or communication faults.
- Avoid permanently bypassing zones or devices to silence nuisance alerts.
- Review backup capacity when new cameras, network equipment or security devices are added.
